Matt and Helen met at the University of Richmond through friends of friends and math classes (the only overlap between business and science majors). They saw each other out on the weekends and often found themselves in the corner of parties talking for hours but Helen was always dating someone at the time (much to Matt's dismay). Matt and Helen graduated and Matt stayed in Richmond and Helen went to DC. In 2017, Matt accepted a job in Charlottesville and Helen began a graduate program at UVA. They bumped into each other in a bar one night and began seeing each other nearly every day after that.

Growing up, every summer, Helen went to her family's house on Skaneateles Lake in upstate New York which has been in the family for more than 100 years. She always describes it as her favorite place in the world and couldn't wait to go back each summer. The trip to Skaneateles in the summer of 2020 was a welcomed trip during a pandemic summer. The trip also coincided with her mom's birthday, and for the celebration, her dad had arranged to have a photographer capture the family at the shoreline at sunset. What Helen didn't know is that Matt had actually been the one to hire the photographer to capture his proposal. The photographer arrived and asked that Matt and Helen serve as a "test shot". Matt and Helen obliged but when the photographer stepped back to "check the test shot" Matt got on one knee. After some disbelief, Helen said yes! The surprises weren't over as Helen's parents had secretly invited Matt's parents to be there for the special day.
